Biography and CV

David HummerDavid was born on June 19, 1963 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His mother was a full time house-wife and his father a factory worker. From early childhood his gift for creating art was recognized and nurtured. In 1974 his father passed away unexpectedly and his mother moved him and his 5 brothers and sisters to central Wisconsin to be closer to relatives. David graduated Wausau West High School in 1981, already pursuing his life as a painter. After leaving the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he opened an art gallery/picture frame business on the upper east side of the city named Aristoi, then a second a few years later that was self-named. He continued to create his own paintings and drawings throughout this period. His work involved oil on canvas as well as graphite drawings, using many unique and separate images that when combined, melded into a single statement, typically regarding his views on capitalism.

In 1989 he was in Manhattan on a business trip with a fellow gallery owner when he realized his work was about to take a different direction. He had just exited a building where they were showing Hockney’s latest work. A gallery where one with means could purchase a work of art priced in the millions. It was then that he noticed a homeless man sitting on the sidewalk with a sign on his lap asking for help. This extreme contrast of wealth and poverty came as a shock. A few years later his work transformed into realist portraits of homeless people in an attempt to create an awareness of an ever-increasing problem in the US. He abandoned his gallery business and would spend the next 15 years producing these portraits and working with homeless shelters and nonprofit organizations.

He recently moved back to Wausau after living in Las Vegas, Nevada for the past 8 years and is currently developing a new series of works.
